Beloved wife of the late Irving Berman; mother of Allan Berman (Michele), Laura Steel (Richard), and Jenna Field (Andy); grandmother of Gregory Berman, Mead Berman, Emily Glassman, Marc Steel and Arthur Field; great-grandmother of Hannah Berman and Milly Berman. A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 19, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. at King David Memorial park, Falls Church, VA. Arrangements by JOSEPH GAWLER'S SONS.

Deceased Name: N.Va. Postwar Builder, Developer Irving Berman

Irving Berman, 89, a builder and real estate developer who helped develop Washington's Northern Virginia suburbs after World War II, died Aug. 24 at Arlington Hospital of complications related to diabetes.

Mr. Berman and his partner, George Hurwitz, formed Larchmont Construction after the war and presided over its construction of single-family homes and apartments throughout Northern Virginia for the next 20 years. He was named Fairfax County Businessman of the Year in 1962. After the dissolution of Larchmont Construction in the mid-1960s, Mr. Berman formed Berman Realty and continued his development and real estate business into the mid-1980s, when he retired.

Mr. Berman, a resident of Arlington, was born in New York and graduated from New York University. After college he played semi-professional football for the New York Bulldogs.

He came to Washington during World War II and worked as a civilian with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Navy Bureau of Ships.

He had served on the board of Northern Virginia Community College.

He was a founder and board member of Security National Bank and a former president of the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and the Arlington-Fairfax Jewish Center.

Mr. Berman was active in Democratic Party politics and was former financial chairman for the 10th District Democratic Party.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Betty Dorf Berman of Arlington; three children, Allan Berman of Washington, Laura Steel of Philadelphia and Jenna Field of Warwick, N.Y.; a sister; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
